Frequently Asked Questions

What if I need a prescription but don’t have a primary care provider?

You can visit the CDK Family Medicine and Walk-In Clinic and Midtown Kingston Health Home, which offer services for non-emergency health needs, including prescription refills.

The Greater Napanee Health Home also offers an Access Clinic for people living in the Town of Greater Napanee without a primary care provider - services include providing prescription renewals.

Pharmacists at your local pharmacy are also able to prescribe certain medication to treat common ailments, including: acid reflux, acne, canker sores, cold sores, dermatitis, diaper rash, hay fever, hemorrhoids, impetigo, insect bites and hives, menstrual cramps, nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, oral thrush, parasitic worms, pink eye, sprains and strains, tick bites (post-exposure prophylaxis to prevent Lyme disease), urinary tract infections and yeast infections.

Where can I get help with mental health?

You can access mental health support through AccessMHA, which is available online 24/7. Additionally, CDK Family Medicine and Walk-In Clinic provides mental health care.

I need urgent care, but I don’t have a primary care provider. What should I do?

You can visit the CDK Family Medicine and Walk-In Clinic, which offers walk-in services for non-emergent acute health needs.

The Greater Napanee Health Home offers an access clinic for people without a primary care provider living in the Town of Greater Napanee to address urgent issues.

Where can I find services for my baby?

The Well Baby Care Clinic at KFL&A Public Health offers wellness checks, growth monitoring, immunizations, and milestone screenings for infants without a primary care provider.

What are my options for youth health services?

The Portable Outreach Care Hub (PORCH) provides various youth health services, for individuals who may face barriers to accessing care. Services through Youth Wellness Hub Ontario (YWHO) include primary care, sexual health care and counselling.

Students at Queen's University or St. Lawrence College can also access health services through their schools.

Can I access sexual health services without a primary care provider?

Yes, the Midtown Kingston Health Home and CDK Family Medicine and Walk-In Clinic both offer sexual health care services without requiring you to have a primary care provider.

Are there services for people who are unhoused or at risk of homelessness?

Yes, Street Health Centre provides care and services for individuals who are unhoused or precariously housed, may have been incarcerated, may be affected by or at risk of acquiring Hepatitis C (HCV), including primary care, substance use treatment, harm reduction, Rapid Access Addiction Medicine (RAAM), disease prevention, hepatitis C (HCV) testing/treatment and smoking cessation.

The Portable Outreach Care Hub (PORCH) also brings health care and community services to individuals facing barriers to accessing care, particularly those who may be unhoused. They provide testing and treatment, wound care, psychiatry, and youth health supports at various locations.

What if I need to see a specialist?

You can visit your nearest walk-in clinic or Health Home that offers care for people without a primary care provider, where they can assess your needs and provide referrals to specialists if necessary. 

How do I get a primary care provider in FLA?

Those without a primary care provider are encouraged to register with Health Care Connect by calling 1-800-445-1822 or registering online. This provincial system helps connect you to a primary care provider. 

Greenwood Medical Centre (East End Health Home) continues to roster individuals who reside in Kingston’s east end and do not currently have a primary care provider.

The Greater Napanee Health Home also continues to accept new people who reside within Greater Napanee and do not currently have a primary care provider.
