A Collaborative Effort for Lasting Change

August 22, 2024.

We are pleased to share an exciting update on our initiative to improve Indigenous health and wellness in our region. In collaboration with FLA OHT partner Kingston Community Health Centres (KCHC) and Three Things Consulting, we have embarked on an innovative Indigenous-led project aimed at enhancing health outcomes for Indigenous Peoples in our communities.

This initiative, which will continue through the Spring of 2025, is a significant step towards advancing health equity by focusing on three key areas:

  1. Culturally Respectful and Relevant Policies, Processes, and Procedures:
Three Things Consulting is working with up to five FLA OHT partners to create or enhance policies that improve the quality of care for Indigenous Peoples and the experience of Indigenous staff and volunteers. This collaborative effort will ensure that our health-care spaces are not only inclusive but also culturally respectful and responsive to the needs of Indigenous communities.
  1. Listening, Learning, and Cultural Capacity Building:
To foster a deeper understanding of Indigenous health and wellness, Three Things Consulting is offering full-day, in-person Wellness and Awareness Circles for up to 20 people from FLA OHT partner organizations. These sessions are designed to build cultural capacity and confidence among health-care providers, enabling them to deliver more informed and compassionate care and strengthen the well-being of Indigenous Peoples.

As part of this initiative, Three Things Consulting will also offer Zoom-based sessions in September 2024 to help FLA OHT partners deepen their understanding of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. These sessions will explore the history and significance of the day, as well as practical ways to advance truth-telling and reconciliation within health-care settings.
  1. Indigenous Spaces and Places in Health Care:
Recognizing the importance of creating spaces that honour Indigenous approaches to health and well-being, Three Things Consulting will work with up to 6 FLA OHT partners in building relationships with local Indigenous artists, knowledge keepers, and Elders. These collaborations will result in the creation of meaningful artworks that recognize, celebrate, honour and showcase Indigenous approaches to well being.

We are grateful to Three Things Consulting for their collaboration on this initiative and their commitment to strengthening Indigenous health and well-being in our region. Together, let's continue to listen, learn, and act—creating a health-care system that is equitable, inclusive, and respectful for all.
