The holiday season is a time for celebration and connection, but it also brings unique challenges for staying healthy and safe. The Frontenac, Lennox, and Addington Ontario Health Team (FLA OHT) is here to help with practical tips to keep you well this festive season.

Plan ahead

  • Check your medications: Don’t wait until the last minute. See a primary care provider if you need a prescription renewal, and find out the holiday hours for your local pharmacy to ensure you can get refills before December 23.

Be careful

  • Winter safety matters: Icy conditions can increase the risk of falls and accidents. Wear appropriate footwear, take short, careful steps, and reduce your driving speed to stay safe on snowy roads.

Stay warm

  • Layer up: Dress warmly in layers, and don’t forget hats and gloves. Seek warm shelter to prevent frostbite and hypothermia during colder days.

Mind your mind

  • Take care of your mental health: The holidays can bring emotional stress. Find healthy coping strategies like exercise or connecting with loved ones. If needed, reach out to your primary care provider or services like AccessMHA or Addiction and Mental Health Services (AMHS) for support.

Stay healthy

  • Prioritize your well-being: Eat nutritious foods, limit alcohol and caffeine, and stay active. Wash your hands regularly to prevent the spread of viruses and ensure your vaccines are up to date. If you have ongoing health concerns, schedule a check-up with your primary care provider.

Plan to be safe

  • Substance safety: Don’t use substances alone—have a buddy who can call for help if needed. If you plan to drink alcohol, arrange for a designated driver or other safe transportation.
