Spotlight on Dr. Justyna Nowak
What is your job title, employer, and FLA OHT role?
I am a family physician with a practice at Greenwood Medical Centre. I also care for patients in long term care and help cover the COVID Assessment Centre. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of meeting lots of great students who have come to work at my clinic and through teaching at Queen's University. I currently provide palliative care for my patients in the community and in long term care. Within the OHT, I have been very honoured to work alongside Dr. Leonie Herx as Co-Chairs of the Palliative Care Partnership.
Why is the work of the FLA OHT important to you?
I was really drawn to the OHT as I am very aware that not all residents of our region have the same access to care/services and not all groups are seeing their health needs met. Our FLA OHT is really an ACTION PLAN to improve care for all. In my role, we are focused on improving access and delivery of palliative care, but there are many other projects and collaborations within the OHT. We have so many great people involved, and all are committed to achieving better patient outcomes. It's really an exciting time for our region's healthcare plan.
What motivates you every day to get out of bed and show up to work?
I feel so fortunate to be able to care for patients from infancy to end of life. Everyday I know my patients will come with questions or medical concerns that need attention. It's so rewarding to help others with their health journey. I'm also fortunate to have great colleagues and administrative staff, so my office and workplaces have a supportive and caring atmosphere.
Outside of work and your FLA OHT involvement, how do you spend your time?
There's honestly not a lot of free time right now; however, I love being outside when the weather is nice. I enjoy my garden and walking the dog - we recently got an energetic puppy, Obi. My family is very important to me, and on cold and rainy days we started working on puzzles together. This was my family's pandemic hobby, along with picking up yoga.
What is something that might surprise people about you?
That's a tough question. I think some would be surprised that I'm obsessed with electric cars right now! I've never been a car person, but my daughter and I have had enough discussions that now I find myself researching electric cars outside of our conversations. When it's time to replace my current car, I can't wait to go electric!
